Phil Liggett
Cycling Commentator
Phil Liggett is cycling commentator and journalist for many bike races, including the Tour de
France and Olympic races. Currently he covers cycling for Versus (U.S.), ITV (Britain), and
SBS (Australia). Initially a writer for Cycling magazine, Phil has also written for The Guardian
and The Observer. In 1997, he was appointed Cycle Sport magazine’s international editor.
In 1973, at the age of 30, Phil became the youngest ever international commissaire of the
Union Cycliste Internationale. Additionally, his involvement in organizing cycle racing events
led him to become vice-president of the Association Internationale Organisateurs des
Courses Cycliste. In 1997 he became president of the Cyclists’ Tour Club (CTC).
In addition to cycling, Phil has also covered other sports including triathlons and ski jumping.
Phil is well known for his colorful expressions he uses to describe riders and racing conditions.
These terms came to be known as “Liggettisms” and a collection of them was published in
2005. In 2009, Phil was inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame.
Phil currently resides in Bayford, Hertfordshire but spends much of his leisure time in South
Africa.
