Since 1996, Dave also covered major college basketball and football games for ESPN, ABC, and
ESPN Radio.
Barnett joined ESPN as a football commentator in 1996, where he has announced ESPN and
ABC’s coverage of major college football, including the 2003 Arkansas-Kentucky seven-overtime
game, which was voted the #1 telecast in the first 25 years of ESPN by viewers in 2004. Dave has
also worked as a commentator on NFL preseason telecasts for the Chicago Bears (2003-present),
Dallas Cowboys (2000-02), Green Bay Packers (1999) and Houston Oilers (1989-96).
In addition to his baseball work with the Rangers, Barnett has covered Major League Baseball for
ESPN and ESPN Radio, as well as the College World Series (2001-04).
Additionally, Barnett has been a commentator for select USGA championships for ESPN, including
the 2001-02 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
Dave also has extensive background as a basketball play-by-play announcer. During the
06-07 NBA season, Dave worked as the TV play-by-play commentator for the San Antonio Spurs,
a role he previously served in for nine seasons (1988-96). From 1981 to 1988, Barnett was the TV
and radio play-by-play commentator for the Dallas Mavericks, receiving the UPI radio play-by-play
Commentator of the Year Award in 1987 and 1988. When Barnett started with the Mavericks in
1981, he was the youngest broadcaster in the NBA at the age of 23.
Prior to joining ESPN, Barnett covered the Southwest Conference Game of the Week for Raycom
Sports from 1989-1996.
Barnett, born April 27, 1958, is a native of Denton, Texas where he currently resides with his wife and
two children. He is a 1979 graduate of the University of North Texas.
