Darren McCarty

Hockey Analyst

Darren McCarty is a former professional hockey player who starred as member of the
“Grind Line” along with Kirk Maltby and Kris Draper for the Detroit Red Wings in the late 90’s
and early 00’s.

During his 18 year NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings and Calgary Flames, McCarty helped
lead the Red Wings to four Stanley Cup Championships from 1997 – 2008, including scoring the
clinching goal against the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1997 NHL Finals which won him the ESPY
Award for NHL Play of the Year.

Always a fan favorite, D-Mac is as well known for his status as an enforcer as he is for his
clutch scoring and passing. His long running feud with the Colorado Avalanche’s Claude
Lemieux that culminated with “Fight Night at the Joe” in 1997, helped make Darren a household
name among hockey fans and the Red Wings-Avalanche rivalry among the best in sports.

Darren has several interests and organizations he works with outside of hockey as well. His band,
The Grinders, developed a strong local following during his years with the Red Wings. In 2003,
Darren was awarded the NHL Foundation Award as a part of his work with the McCarty Cancer
Foundation, an organization he started in 1997 to honor his father Craig.

After retiring from professional hockey in 2009, Darren began his career in broadcasting as a
hockey analyst for Versus.

A native of British Columbia, Darren currently resides in Troy, Michigan.
