On
November 12th, Starlight presented its 12th
Annual Celebrity Sports Auction, held at Madison Square
Garden. This
year’s event, sponsored by Nautica, was our most successful
auction yet! The
evening program featured a silent and live auction, which
included sports memorabilia, nights on the town and travel
around the country. Popular
items included a weekend in the Hamptons complete with use of
a Bentley, full access tickets to the Daytona 500, and a
signed jersey by Nolan Ryan.
Jorge Posada spiced up the night by helping the
auctioneer with season tickets to the Yankees games.
Perhaps the hottest items of the night, Jorge threw in
additional tickets, a signed bat by Derek Jeter, and a visit
to the dugout. New
York Giants Tiki Barber, Greg Comella, and Charles Way sold
sponsorship of three Starlight Fun Centers, a mobile
entertainment center, which will be placed in hospitals for
sick children to use. Each
year the Starlight Hall of Fame honors individuals in the
sports community who work tirelessly to help Starlight bring
smiles to the faces of sick children.
Michael Strahan of the New York Giants and Scott Clark
of WABC Sports were this year’s inductees in recognition of
their consistent support of Starlight’s mission and
programs.
Other
special guests helped to make this evening unforgettable.
This year’s Shining Star recipients were Richard
Jefferson of the New Jersey Nets, Tari Phillips of the New
York Liberty, Tim Howard of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars,
and Jorge Posada of the New York Yankees.
Steven Schirripa and John Ventimiglia from the hit show
“The Soprano’s”, former NBA All-Star Willis Reed,
Olympic Gold Medalist Jenny Thompson, Bryan Berard and Dale
Purinton of the New York Rangers, Emily Stauffer and Nel
Fettig of the New York Power, Steven Jolley of the New
York/New Jersey MetroStars, actress Piper Perabo, Miss Teen
USA Marissa Whitley also were there to support Starlight. Sponsors
of the Auction included Nautica, American Airlines, AXA Client
Solutions, New York Rangers, Major League Baseball, New York
Rangers Alumni Association, NFL, Planters, The Feil
Foundation, MetroStars, 620 WSNR Sporting News, Modell’s
Sporting Goods, Buzzy and Victoria Geduld, Jaguar, and Sports
Illustrated. The auction generated Starlight’s
Board of Directors designated a portion of the proceeds to
establish the Heroes Fund.
In recognition of the courage of uniformed fire
fighters and police officers, this fund will guarantee that
any sick children of these everyday heroes who want their wish
granted from Starlight will receive them. This event would not have been such a success without the help of our volunteers.
